<p>A new <a href="https://www.thebureauinvestigates.com/stories/2022-02-10/farms-touting-deforestation-free-soya-still-tearing-down-the-amazon">joint investigation</a> by Unearthed, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and Ecostorm has revealed that a loophole in the so-called Amazon Soya Moratorium renders supermarkets’ customer-friendly claims of ‘deforestation-free soya’ near meaningless.</p>
<p>Soya is a key commodity used by dairy, cattle, pig and poultry farmers in Europe and the rest of the world to feed their livestock.</p>
<p>The findings undermine eco-friendly claims by some global meatpackers, animal feed companies and supermarkets that soya is no longer linked to Amazon destruction.</p>
<p><strong>Deforestation by the back door</strong></p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/dec/03/uk-firms-urge-brazil-to-stop-amazon-deforestation-for-soy-production">Amazon Soy Moratorium</a>  – first agreed in 2006 – bans the sale of soya grown on Amazon land deforested after July 2008. But beef and other crops are not restricted under the soy moratorium, meaning farmers can sell their soya to traders as “deforestation-free” while destroying rainforest for cattle, corn and other commodities.</p>
<p>Evidence suggests that the moratorium has successfully stopped rainforest being directly converted into soya fields. However, soya farming has continued to expand in the Amazon, overwhelmingly on land that was previously cleared, usually for cattle. That expansion can still indirectly cause fresh deforestation, as ranchers sell up to farmers at a profit and move deeper into the forest, where land is cheaper.</p>
<p>The investigation showed that in recent years destruction of the rainforest has increased.</p>
<p>For example, between 2009 to 2019 in Mato Grosso state – which stretches over the southern part of the Amazon and grows more soya than anywhere else in Brazil – 1,180 sq km of rainforest was felled on soya farms in order to grow other crops or to provide pasture for cattle ranching. This is according to data analysed by the Brazilian NGO Instituto Centro de Vida (ICV) and shared with the investigation partners. The vast majority of this deforestation was illegal, lacking licenses under Brazil’s Forest Code.</p>
<p>That land area, according to the World Land Trust <a href="https://www.worldlandtrust.org/get-involved/educational-resources/area-converter/">calculator</a>, equates to an area nearly the size of Hong Kong.</p>
<p><strong>Destination UK</strong></p>
<p>In 2020 the UK imported more than 140,000 tonnes of soya from municipalities with at least 7 sq kms of hidden deforestation on soya farms, and about 50,000 tonnes of corn – both crops are used in the meat and dairy supply chains of major food retailers for animal feed.</p>
<p>According to Paul Morozzo, Senior Forest Campaigner at Greenpeace UK “Supermarkets cannot ignore the role of meat and dairy in the climate crisis. It’s time they took real action to end links to deforestation for good. That means dropping forest destroyers and reducing meat and dairy. Until they do, they may as well be handing out matches to light this years’ Amazon fires.”</p>
<p>Soya from the areas most at risk for this type of deforestation is regularly shipped to the UK, Spain and other European countries for use as livestock feed on factory farms by major grain traders including Bunge, which supplies soya to Spain and Cargill, a major UK supplier. Cargill’s customers include Tesco, Asda and Lidl.</p>
<p>The investigation established that, with trade links leading to Europe and China, certain Mato Grosso municipalities appear particularly vulnerable to this hidden deforestation. The analysis shows a strong flow of soya from these areas to the UK, suggesting that UK businesses could be turning a blind eye to deforestation in UK supply chains.</p>
<p>The Retail Soy Group, which represents leading retailers including Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Lidl and Waitrose, acknowledged to the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/feb/10/loophole-allowing-for-deforestation-on-soya-farms-in-brazils-amazon">Guardian</a> newspaper that there were limitations to the moratorium and said the new allegations “further highlight the need to have strengthened legal protections of these vital ecosystems”.</p>

<p>A recent study from the National University of Singapore revealed that regular tea drinkers have better organised brain regions &#8211; and this is associated with healthy cognitive function &#8211; compared to non-tea drinkers.</p>
<p>The discovery was made after examining neuroimaging data of 36 older adults.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our results offer the first evidence of positive contribution of tea drinking to brain structure, and suggest that drinking tea regularly has a protective effect against age-related decline in brain organisation,&#8221; explained team leader Assistant Professor Feng Lei, who is from the Department of Psychological Medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.</p>
<p>The research was carried out together with collaborators from the University of Essex and University of Cambridge, and the findings were published in scientific journal <em><a href="https://www.aging-us.com/article/102023/text" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aging</a>.</em></p>
<p><strong>Effect on brain networks<br />
</strong></p>
<p>Past studies have demonstrated that tea intake is <a href="https://www.naturalhealthnews.uk/article/hot-tea-or-cold-tea-which-is-healthiest/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">beneficial to human health</a>, and the positive effects include <a href="https://www.naturalhealthnews.uk/health/2018/07/black-tea-aromatherapy-it-could-aid-stress/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mood improvement</a>, <a href="https://www.naturalhealthnews.uk/diet-2/2017/12/daily-hot-tea-lowers-glaucoma-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reduced risk of glaucoma</a> and <a href="https://www.naturalhealthnews.uk/health/2011/11/green-tea-helps-lower-cholesterol/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cardiovascular disease prevention</a>. In fact, results of a longitudinal study led by Asst Prof Feng which was published in 2017 showed that daily consumption of tea can <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs12603-016-0687-0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reduce the risk of cognitive decline</a> in older persons by 50%.</p>
<p>Following this discovery, Asst Prof Feng and his team further explored the direct effect of tea on brain networks.</p>
<p>The research team recruited 36 adults aged 60 and above, and gathered data about their health, lifestyle, and psychological well-being. The elderly participants also had to undergo neuropsychological tests and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The study was carried out from 2015 to 2018.</p>
<p>Upon analysing the participants&#8217; cognitive performance and imaging results, the research team found that individuals who consumed either green tea, oolong tea, or black tea at least four times a week for about 25 years had brain regions that were interconnected in a more efficient way.</p>
<p><strong>Keeping the flow of information going</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Take the analogy of road traffic as an example &#8211; consider brain regions as destinations, while the connections between brain regions are roads. When a road system is better organised, the movement of vehicles and passengers is more efficient and uses less resources. Similarly, when the connections between brain regions are more structured, information processing can be performed more efficiently,&#8221; explained Asst Prof Feng.</p>
<p>He added, &#8220;We have shown in our previous studies that tea drinkers had better cognitive function as compared to non-tea drinkers. Our current results relating to brain network indirectly support our previous findings by showing that the positive effects of regular tea drinking are the result of improved brain organisation brought about by preventing disruption to interregional connections.&#8221;</p>
<p>This small but interesting study needs to be repeated on a larger scale. The team next plans to examine the effects of tea, as well as the bioactive compounds in tea that can have on cognitive decline.</p>

<p>In this age of Instagram and social media food photography, <a href="https://www.foodmanufacture.co.uk/Article/2018/02/15/2018-food-trends-edible-flowers-lead-the-way" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pretty edible dible flowers</a> can often be seen brightening up photos of salads, soups, meat dishes and more.</p>
<p>But, say, Portuguese researchers flowers aren&#8217;t just a pretty garnish. The scientists from the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, Porto University, and the University of Aveiro in Portugal analysed the phytochemical composition of borage and centaurea, two popular edible flowers.</p>
<p>Overall their  findings suggest that “daily consumption of edible flowers may contribute to supplying some macronutrients, vitamins, and organic acids to the human diet.”​</p>
<p>The study, published in the journal <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0963996919303175" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Food Research International</em></a>, ​also concluded that consumption of the petals from these flowers can, in particular, contribute to the daily recommended dose of vitamin E (mostly alpha-tocopherols), based on a 100g dry weight of each flower petal at all flowering stages.</p>
<p><strong>What’s in a flower?​</strong></p>
<p>Further analysis of the flower petals collected from the greenhouse of the School of Agriculture of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, was conducted lookign at the flowers at different stages of development (tight bud stage, mature bud stage, and fully open).</p>
<p>They then analysed content of dietary fibre, carbohydrates, fat, protein, fatty acids, vitamin E, and carotenoids &#8211; which is a pigment compound that has been linked to eye health benefits and more.</p>
<p>The nutritive value of both flowers were quite similar. The main differences were that centaurea had more calories and total dietary fiber, while borage was higher in fatty-acids and carotenoids.</p>
<p>Looking at true petals alone, without the bud, borage had the lowest total carotenoids.</p>
<p>“Despite the lower amounts of some compounds…These characteristics may therefore encourage the use of edible flowers (whole flower and petals) for human consumption,” ​they concluded.</p>
<p><strong>Flower Power</strong></p>

<p>Both centaurea and borage have a long history of culinary use.</p>
<p>Centaurea (<em>Centaurea cyanus</em>), also called ‘blue cornflower’ or ‘bachelor&#8217;s button’, is a plant native to Europe. Its flowers have no fragrance, but they have a sweet-to-spicy clove-like flavor. Centaurea petals are ideal for mixing with other flowers to make dishes more attractive, for sprinkling over salads and can be used as an ingredient in tea.​</p>
<p>Borage (<em>Borago officinalis</em>) is an annual herb, that is native to some parts of the Mediterranean region, and is cultivated for medicinal and culinary uses, but primarily for borage seed oil. <a href="https://www.naturalhealthnews.uk/article/borage-for-health-and-courage/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Borage flowers</a> are also blue and on rare occasions appear white or pink. Petals have a cucumber-like taste and the stamens add a hint of sweetness. The flowers are used in vegetable dishes and fruit salads, to garnish soups or decorate desserts, as well as in ice cubes for summer drinks.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p id="first" class="lead"><span style="color: #808080;"><em>Natural Health News —</em></span> If you are at risk of type-2 diabetes, you might consider switching to your daily loaf from wheat to one made from wholegrain rye.</p>
<p>The consumption of whole grain cereals has been associated with a lower risk of type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers. How it does this – whether via effects from bioactive compounds contained in whole grains, or the effect that phytochemicals and fibres have on intestinal bacteria – is still the subject of some speculation.</p>
<p>In a new study researchers from the University of Eastern Finland and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) tested the metabolic effects of consuming an enriched wheat bread against wholegrain rye bread in 15 human volunteers.</p>
<p>For the first four weeks of the study, the participants ate 6 to 10 slices a day of either whole grain rye bread or a white wheat bread enriched with fermented rye bran. In a second 4-week testing period, all participants ate the same amount of rye-free white wheat bread. Otherwise, they didn&#8217;t change their diet.</p>
<p>At the end of both testing periods, they gave blood samples, which were analysed by a combination of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. In particular the researchers were looking to compare the samples for concentrations of certain metabolites (the end product of metabolism) which might indicate a risk</p>
<p><strong>Serotonin-glucose connection</strong></p>
<p>The consumption of wholegrain rye led to, among other things, significantly lower serotonin concentrations when compared to consumption of the wheat bread. This finding was confirmed in a separate feeding test involving mice.</p>
<p>Serotonin is best known as a neurotransmitter in the brain. However, serotonin produced by the intestines remains separated from the brain, serving various peripheral functions including modulation of gut&#8217;s motility. Increased blood serotonin has also been associated with high blood glucose levels.</p>
<p>&#8220;Whole grain, on the other hand, is known to reduce the risk of diabetes, and on the basis of these new results, the effect could at least partly be due to a decrease in serotonin levels,&#8221; says Academy Research Fellow Kati Hanhineva from the University of Eastern Finland.</p>
<p>The researchers say the findings, published in the <em><a href="https://academic.oup.com/ajcn/article-abstract/109/6/1630/5480604?redirectedFrom=fulltext" target="_blank" rel="noopener">American Journal of Clinical Nutrition</a></em>, may also shed some light on the development of colorectal cancer.</p>
<p>&#8220;Some recent studies have found cancer patients to have higher plasma serotonin levels than healthy controls,&#8221; Scientist Pekka Keski-Rahkonen from IARC adds.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[German scientists have uncovered an evolutionary basis for our affinity with fermented foods, and with it a greater understanding of how lactic acid bacteria interact with our bodies. ]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em><span style="color: #808080;">Natural Health News —</span></em> Consuming lactic acid bacteria – the kind that turns milk into yogurt and cabbage into sauerkraut – is associated with many health benefits, but scientists still don&#8217;t understand, on a molecular level, how these &#8216;good&#8217; bacteria support good health.</p>

<p>Now, scientist from the University of Leipzig have identified one way that lactic acid bacteria interact with our bodies. They began by investigating proteins on the surface of cells called hydroxycarboxylic acid (HCA) receptors. Most animals have only two types of this receptor but humans and great apes have three.</p>
<p>Lead researchers Claudia Stäubert and her team discovered that a metabolite produced by lactic acid bacteria, D-phenyllactic acid, binds strongly to the third HCA receptor, signalling its presence to the immune system. They believe this third HCA receptor arose in a common ancestor of humans and great apes, and enabled them to consume foods that are starting to decay, such as fruits picked up from the ground.</p>
<p>The study, which appears in the journal in <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosgenetics/article?id=10.1371/journal.pgen.1008145" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>PLOS Genetics</em></a>, provides new insights into the evolutionary dynamics between microbes and their human hosts and opens new research directions for understanding the multiple positive effects of eating fermented foods.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are convinced that this receptor very likely mediates some beneficial and anti-inflammatory effects of lactic acid bacteria in humans,&#8221; stated Stäubert. In addition to supporting the consumption of fermented foods for their health benefits, it could also aid the development of new treatments for inflammatory diseases, she adds.</p>
<p>The research team is now looking to explore how D-phenyllactic acid impacts the immune system, and whether the metabolite also affects fat cells, which also carry the third HCA receptor on their surfaces.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="lead"><span style="color: #808080;"><em>Natural Health News — </em></span>A food ingredient widely used in baked goods, animal feeds and artificial flavourings, appears to increase levels of several hormones that are associated with risk of obesity and diabetes, according to new research.</p>
<p>The ingredient of concern is calcium propionate (also known as E282) which is added to ready-made foods to which prevent mold growth. Propionate (propionic acid) is a naturally occurring short-chain fatty acid found in butter and some types of cheese, but calcium propionate, used in food production, is a synthetic ingredient.</p>
<p>An international team of researchers led by Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health combined data from a randomized placebo-controlled trial in humans with results from mouse studies. Results showed that in humans consuming calcium propionate can trigger a cascade of metabolic events that leads to insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia. Insulin resistance is when the body doesn&#8217;t respond well to the hormone insulin, which helps cells take in sugar, or glucose. Such resistance can lead to the high blood sugar levels seen in people with diabetes.</p>

<p>The study is published in the online journal <a href="https://stm.sciencemag.org/content/11/489/eaav0120" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Science Translational Medicine</em></a>.</p>
<p>“Understanding how ingredients in food affect the body’s metabolism at the molecular and cellular level could help us develop simple but effective measures to tackle the dual epidemics of obesity and diabetes,” said Gökhan S. Hotamışlıgil, James Stevens Simmons Professor of Genetics and Metabolism and Director of the Sabri Ülker Center for Metabolic Research at Harvard Chan School.</p>
<p>More than 400 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes, and the rate of diabetes incidence is projected to increase 40% by 2040 despite extensive efforts to curb the disease. The surging rates of diabetes, as well as obesity, in the last 50 years indicate that environmental and dietary factors must be influencing the growth of this epidemic.</p>
<p>Researchers have suggested that dietary components including ingredients used for preparation or preservation of food may be a contributing factor, but there is little research evaluating these molecules.</p>
<p><strong>Study details</strong></p>
<p>For this study, the researchers first administered calcium propionate to mice and found that it rapidly activated the sympathetic nervous system, which led to a surge in hormones, including glucagon, norepinephrine, and a newly discovered gluconeogenic hormone called fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4). This in turn led the mice to produce more glucose from their liver cells, leading to hyperglycemia &#8211; a defining trait of diabetes. Moreover, the researchers found that chronic treatment of mice with a dose of calcium propionate that was equivalent to the amount typically consumed by humans led to significant weight gain in the mice, as well as insulin resistance.</p>
<p>To determine how the findings in mice may translate to humans, the researchers established a double-blinded placebo-controlled study that included 14 healthy participants.</p>
<p>The participants were randomized into two groups: One group received a meal that contained one gram of calcium propionate as an additive and the other group was given a meal that contained a placebo. Blood samples were collected before the meal, within 15 minutes of eating the meal, and every 30 minutes thereafter for four hours.</p>
<p><strong>A metabolic disrupter</strong></p>
<p>The findings are concerning given how widely calcium propionate is used in foods.</p>
<p>The researchers found that people who consumed the meal containing calcium propionate had significant increases in norepinephrine as well as increases in glucagon and FABP4 soon after eating the meal.</p>
<p>The findings indicate that calcium propionate may act as a &#8220;metabolic disruptor&#8221; that potentially increases the risk for diabetes and obesity in humans. The researchers noted that while calcium propionate is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the US Food and Drug Administration, these new findings warrant further investigation into calcium propionate and potential alternatives that could be used in food preparation.</p>
<p>&#8220;The dramatic increase in the incidence of obesity and diabetes over the past 50 years suggests the involvement of contributing environmental and dietary factors. One such factor that warrants attention is the ingredients in common foods. We are exposed to hundreds of these chemicals on a daily basis, and most have not been tested in detail for their potential long-term metabolic effects,&#8221; said Amir Tirosh, associate professor of medicine at Tel-Aviv University&#8217;s Sackler School of Medicine, director of the Division of Endocrinology at Sheba Medical Center in Israel, and research fellow at Harvard Chan School.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="color: #808080;"><em>Natural Health News —</em></span> Antioxidants commonly found in blueberries can help improve blood vessel function and a decrease in systolic blood pressure in healthy people, according to a new UK data.</p>

<p>Researchers from King’s College London studied 40 healthy volunteers for one month. They were randomly given either a drink containing 200g of blueberries, or a matched control drink daily.</p>
<p>The team monitored chemicals in volunteers’ blood and urine as well as their blood pressure and flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery.</p>
<p>FMD is a measure of how the artery widens when blood flow increases, which is considered a sensitive biomarker of cardiovascular disease risk.</p>
<p>In a further study, researchers compared the effects of a blueberry drink with those of drink containing purified anthocyanins, the phytochemical responsible for the blue, red, pink and purple colour of some fruits and vegetables such as berries and red grapes. They also compared this with control drinks containing either similar levels of fibre, mineral or vitamins found in blueberries.</p>
<p>Results showed that:</p>
<ul>
<li>Effects on blood vessel function were seen two hours after consumption of the blueberry drinks and were sustained for one month even after an overnight fast.</li>
<li>Over the course of the month, blood pressure was reduced by 5mmHg. This is similar to what is commonly seen in studies using blood pressure lowering medication.</li>
<li>The drinks containing purified anthocyanins led to improvements in endothelial function. Endothelial cells act as a barrier between the blood or lymph and the surrounding body tissue, as well as playing key roles in blood clotting and regulating blood pressure.</li>
<li>Neither the control drink, the control with fibre or the control with minerals and vitamins had a significant effect on FMD at two and six hours after consumption.</li>
</ul>
<p>Lead researcher Dr Ana Rodriguez-Mateos from the Department of Nutritional Sciences at King’s said: “Although it is best to eat the whole blueberry to get the full benefit, our study finds that the majority of the effects can be explained by anthocyanins.</p>
<p>“If the changes we saw in blood vessel function after eating blueberries every day could be sustained for a person’s whole life, it could reduce their risk of developing cardiovascular disease by up to 20%.”</p>
<p>The study was published in the <a href="https://academic.oup.com/biomedgerontology/advance-article/doi/10.1093/gerona/glz047/5321875" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Journal of Gerontology Series A</em></a>.</p>

<p><span style="color: #808080;"><em>Natural Health News —</em></span> The industrialisation of agriculture has radically transformed the way most of our food is produced and not always in a good way.</p>
<p>Scaling up production has led to more food being available at lower prices throughout the world. But, increasingly, we are seeing the negative side of this chemically intensive system of food production. Today, 2,000 pesticides with 500 chemical substances are being used in Europe. However, data on how such substances affect soil quality is incomplete and fragmented, and fails to clearly reflect their overall impact on soil systems and human health.</p>
<p>First-time research conducted in the course of two EU-funded projects, iSQAPER and RECARE, is shedding light on the state of European soils. The results are far from reassuring. According to a paper published in the journal <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0048969718343420?via%3Dihub" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><i>Science of the Total Environment</i></a>, pesticide residues were found in the vast majority of agricultural soils tested in 11 European countries.</p>
</div>
<p>The researchers analysed 76 different pesticide residues from 317 topsoil samples. Alarmingly, 43 of the 76 pesticide residues tested were detected in the soils. &#8220;Considering that we tested less than 20% of the active substances currently approved in the EU markets, pesticide residue occurrence in soils might actually be higher,&#8221; the authors state.</p>
<p>Pesticide residues were found in 83% of the analysed agricultural soils in 166 different pesticide combinations. The most common mixtures detected at the highest concentrations were the controversial weedkiller glyphosate and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid, followed by the commonly used pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT, banned in the EU in 1986), and the broad-spectrum fungicides boscalid, epoxiconazole and tebuconazole.</p>
<p>The selected samples originated from soils used in the production of cereals, permanent crops, root crops, non-permanent industrial crops, vegetables, and dry pulses, flowers and fodder crops. Soils from root crops revealed a much higher pesticide residue content than those from other crops. In fact, all of the tested root crop soils contained pesticide residues, with 85% of them containing multiple residues.</p>
<p><b>Better monitoring needed</b></p>
<p>The content of pesticide residues occasionally exceeded their predicted environmental concentrations in soils, but nevertheless remained below threshold values for soil organisms set by the European Food Safety Authority.Nevertheless, there&#8217;s still reason for concern, since the methods used to determine the threshold values are, according toe the scientists, inadequate.</p>
<p>&#8220;To get a pesticide approved on the market, only five soil animals and two bacteria groups are tested. But in the soil we have more than one million species,&#8221; says Prof. Violette Geissen of project coordinator Wageningen University, the Netherlands, in a video posted on the iSQAPER website. &#8220;The others are all not tested on the effects of pesticides. What actually is tested is much less than 1%. Furthermore, mixtures of pesticides in the soils are not tested. Different pesticides can interact in the soils; together can have synergetic effects on others. Nobody knows.&#8221;</p>
<p>The study points to the need for monitoring programmes for pesticide residues and the combined effects of residue mixtures in soils. While RECARE (Preventing and Remediating degradation of soils in Europe through Land Care) has now ended, iSQAPER (Interactive Soil Quality Assessment in Europe and China for Agricultural Productivity and Environmental Resilience) continues in its efforts to promote healthy soils as the basis for sustainable food production.</p>

<p>Growing concerns about health and quality of life have encouraged many people to adopt healthier lifestyles and avoid foods rich in sugars, salt, or fat. Foods and drinks containing non-sugar sweeteners rather than regular (&#8220;free&#8221;) sugars have therefore become increasingly popular.</p>
<p>Although several non-sugar sweeteners are approved for use, less is known about their potential benefits and harms within acceptable daily intakes beacuse the evidence is often limited and conflicting.</p>
<p>To better understand these potential benefits and harms, a team of European researchers analysed 56 studies comparing no intake or lower intake of non-sugar sweeteners with higher intake in healthy adults and children.</p>
<p>The analysis of published studies which appeared in the<a href="https://www.bmj.com/content/364/bmj.k4718" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em> British Medical Journal</em></a> looked at measures included weight, blood sugar (glycaemic) control, oral health, cancer, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, mood and behaviour. Studies were assessed for bias and certainty of evidence.</p>
<p><strong>No real benefits</strong></p>
<p>Overall, the results show that, for most outcomes, there seemed to be no statistically or clinically relevant differences between those exposed to non-sugar sweeteners and those not exposed, or between different doses of non-sugar sweeteners.</p>
<p>For example, in adults, findings from a few small studies suggested small improvements in body mass index and fasting blood glucose levels with non-sugar sweeteners, but the certainty of this evidence was low.</p>
<p>Lower intakes of non-sugar sweeteners were associated with slightly less weight gain (-0.09 kg) than higher intakes, but again the certainty of this evidence was low.</p>
<p>In children, a smaller increase in body mass index score was seen with non-sugar sweeteners compared with sugar, but intake of non-sugar sweeteners made no differences to body weight.</p>
<p>In addition, no good evidence of any effect of non-sugar sweeteners was found for overweight or obese adults or children actively trying to lose weight.</p>
<p>The researchers point out that this is the most comprehensive review on this topic to date, and will inform a World Health Organization guideline for health experts and policy makers.</p>
<p><strong>More and better quality evidence needed?</strong></p>
<p>However, they stress that the quality of evidence in many of the studies was low, so confidence in the results is limited. And they say longer term studies are needed to clarify whether non-sugar sweeteners are a safe and effective alternative to sugar.</p>
<p>In an <a href="https://www.bmj.com/content/364/bmj.k5005" target="_blank" rel="noopener">editorial</a> in the same edition, Vasanti Malik at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health agrees that more studies are needed to understand the potential health effects of non-sugar sweeteners and to guide policy development.</p>
<p>&#8220;Policies and recommendations will need updating regularly, as more evidence emerges to ensure that the best available data is used to inform the important public health debate on sugar and its alternatives,&#8221; she concludes.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p id="first" class="lead"><span style="color: #808080;"><em>Natural Health News &#8211;</em></span> A new review has found that increasing the intake of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids during pregnancy reduces the risk of premature births.</p>

<p>Premature birth is the leading cause of death for children under 5 years old worldwide, accounting for close to one million deaths annually. Premature babies are at higher risk of a range of long-term conditions including visual impairment, developmental delay and learning difficulties.</p>
<p>The analysis from the <a href="https://www.cochrane.org/CD003402/PREG_omega-3-fatty-acid-addition-during-pregnancy" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Cochrane Review</em></a> &#8211; which exists to provide high quality systematic review for healthcare professionals &#8211; updates previous papers by this group.</p>
<p>&#8220;We know premature birth is a critical global health issue, with an estimated 15 million babies born too early each year,&#8221; explains Associate Professor Philippa Middleton from Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). &#8220;While the length of most pregnancies is between 38 and 42 weeks, premature babies are those born before the 37-week mark &#8212; and the earlier a baby is born, the greater the risk of death or poor health.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Important for pregnant women</strong></p>
<p>Associate Professor Middleton and a team of Cochrane researchers have been looking closely at long-chain omega-3 fats and their role in reducing the risk of premature births &#8212; particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) found in fatty fish and fish oil supplements. They looked at 70 randomised trials and found that for pregnant women, increasing the daily intake of long-chain omega-3s:</p>
<ul>
<li>lowers the risk of having a premature baby (less than 37 weeks) by 11% (from 134 per 1000 to 119 per 1000 births)</li>
<li>lowers the risk of having an early premature baby (less than 34 weeks) by 42% (from 46 per 1000 to 27 per 1000 births)</li>
<li>reduces the risk of having a small baby (less than 2500g) by 10%</li>
</ul>
<p>&#8220;There are not many options for preventing premature birth, so these new findings are very important for pregnant women, babies and the health professionals who care for them,&#8221; Associate Professor Middleton says. &#8220;We don&#8217;t yet fully understand the causes of premature labour, so predicting and preventing early birth has always been a challenge. This is one of the reasons omega-3 supplementation in pregnancy is of such great interest to researchers around the world.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Evolving science</strong></p>
<p>The <em>Cochrane Review</em> first looked at omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids during pregnancy back in 2006, and concluded there wasn&#8217;t enough evidence to support the routine use of omega-3 fatty acid supplements during pregnancy. It&#8217;s illustrative of how science can evolve that over a decade on, this updated review concludes that there&#8217;s high quality evidence for omega-3 supplementation being an effective strategy for preventing preterm birth.</p>
<p>&#8220;Many pregnant women in the UK are already taking omega-3 supplements by personal choice rather than as a result of advice from health professionals,&#8221; says Associate Professor Middleton. &#8220;It&#8217;s worth noting though that many supplements currently on the market don&#8217;t contain the optimal dose or type of omega-3 for preventing premature birth. Our review found the optimum dose was a daily supplement containing between 500 and 1000 milligrams (mg) of long-chain omega-3 fats (containing at least 500mg of DHA) starting at 12 weeks of pregnancy.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Ultimately, we hope this review will make a real contribution to the evidence base we need to reduce premature births, which continue to be one of the most pressing and intractable maternal and child health problems in every country around the world.&#8221;</p>
