Q&A: Tired eyes

11 November, 2011

Q – I work for long hours on a computer and find that at the end of some days my eyes are really tired. Do you know of anything natural that will relieve this?

A – Eye strain is quite common after a long bout of focusing the eyes on one object or at one particular distance, such as when sewing, driving or working on a VDU screen. It is essential to take regular breaks and also to exercise the eyes every 15 minutes by looking up from your work and focusing further into the distance.

If your eyes feel tired, try placing cold chamomile tea bags or slices of cucumber over them in the evening. If they become sore or inflamed then a cool infusion of the herb eyebright is a wonderfully soothing eyebath.

You can also take a combination of the tinctures of bilberry and eyebright internally which will strengthen and soothe the eyes. An occasional dose of the homoeopathic remedy Ruta 30 will relieve eye strain when the eyes feel tired and vision is affected by focusing in one place for too long.
